IKEA Store, Southampton

IKEA Store, Southampton

Having worked in the background for over a year finalising costs and developing the design allowed us an unusually long time to plan how we were going to approach the construction.  This store was only the second Ikea to be built in a ‘city centre' environment, being directly on West Quay Road, one of Southampton's busier dual carriageway's.

Deliveries were the obvious concern but when it came to constructing the silo, a 30m tall 2 hour fire rated conveyor structure with no available MEWP access we used an innovative cradle system to install the 250kg rockwool cored composite panels, the store's main elevation had to be installed with only 4m between the new wall and the dual carriageway and a public footpath in between, working closely with the local authorities and our client we used specially adapted MEWP's under a tight timescale to complete.

In addition to the 16,000m2 of external wall cladding panels we also installed a 12,000m2 single ply roof and all of this quicker than we had managed to complete before.

For Topek this was the most successful store construction to date and we hope to have the opportunity to improve again on a new challenge with Ikea in the future.

Topek Project Value £2.1m
